Building a fair and social Europe was one of the four priority areas the European Council set out in its 2019-2024 strategic agenda to guide the work of its institutions. The EU Commission set itself the task of building a Europe that "works for people" and is "fit for the digital age", while safeguarding fundamental rights, social fairness and reducing inequalities. Increased social protection and workers' involvement, more transparency and effective enforcement - these are the specific goals that the EU policy makers sought to implement, either by modifying existing rules and regulations or introducing new ones.
