Since 2022, Bird & Bird’s Dutch offices have proudly partnered with Pro Bono Connect, the Netherlands’ first public interest clearinghouse. Acting as a bridge between NGOs and leading law firms, Pro Bono Connect matches NGOs’ legal questions with firms that can provide free legal advice and representation. Find out more at https://probonoconnect.nl.
Through this collaboration, we’ve supported a diverse range of NGOs on matters relating to human rights, sustainability, and the public interest. Recent highlights include:
- Defending PAX in proceedings initiated by Drummond (USA)
We represented Stichting PAX, a leading peace organisation, in a request for legal assistance filed by the U.S.-based coal producer Drummond. The case related to PAX’s human rights work in Colombia and its report The Dark Side of Coal. The Hague District Court ultimately rejected Drummond’s request for documents and witness testimony from PAX. This significant pro bono matter was led by Olaf Trojan (Partner) and Wouter Kroeze (Senior Associate) from our Dispute Resolution team.
- Advising Stichting Run Her Way on IP strategy
Our brand management team supported the newly founded Stichting Run Her Way, which is dedicated to making running safer and more accessible for women and girls. We provided comprehensive IP advice, covering trademarks, copyright, design rights, and contract strategy—enabling the organisation to build and protect its brand while pursuing its social mission.
Beyond individual matters, we actively participate in Pro Bono Connect events, such as legal roundtables, where we work directly with NGOs to brainstorm solutions to their legal challenges.
