As a partner in our Munich office, joint head of our international Energy and Utilities Sector Group and a member of our Regulatory & Administrative Practice Group, I lead an experienced team of legal experts and advisors that understand the challenges of the energy sector and of multi-utilities companies, as well as the regulatory and politically ambitious environment that challenges them in shaping their future in an increasingly digitised world.

I head up our London Corporate team and am co-head of our International Corporate Group. I am also a member of our London Management Team.

We are delighted to announce that Bird & Bird were recently ranked the most active law firm in European energy M&A and Project Finance according to research from The Lawyer's sister publication Clean Energy Pipeline. Our Energy & Utilities sector group acted on a total of 105 renewable energy Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) transactions and on a further 68 renewable energy project finance transactions in Europe during the first half of 2016 with a combined value of over £1bn.  In each case, this represented more than twice as many deals as the next placed law firm.

Matt Bonass, corporate partner and co-head of our International Energy & Utilities Sector Group commented:

"We have been phenomenally busy over the past months so we expected to be ranked highly. However, to top the league tables, and by such a considerable margin, is really quite remarkable and a real credit to the efforts of the team. We now have one of the leading solar energy practices in Europe, having successfully captured significant parts of the market in many jurisdictions. Beyond solar, we have extensive expertise in other renewables including on-shore and off-shore wind, hydro and anaerobic digestion, all of which feature strongly in the league tables. Most pleasingly perhaps is that all of our European offices contributed to this fantastic result.  We would like to thank all of our loyal clients who have worked with us on these transactions."

The energy market demands deep industry understanding, specialist legal input and innovation in the way legal services are provided. The interaction between technology and renewables continues to disrupt the market and we are well placed to continue our work in emerging areas such as energy storage, energy management, corporate power purchase agreements and smart energy.

For more information on the results and on the Energy & Utilities sector group generally, please contact co-heads Matt Bonass and Rene Voigtlaender.
