Since January 2016, a consortium including Bird & Bird and 9 other partners from academia and industry started working on TOREADOR, a new EU funded project on Big Data.
This ICT project was selected in the context of the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme through which the European Commission intends to help boost Europe's knowledge-driven economy, and tackle issues that will make a difference in people's lives.
TOREADOR (TrustwOrthy model-awaRE Analytics Data platfORm) is a three-year project, which aims at overcoming some major hurdles that until now have prevented many European companies from reaping the full benefits of Big Data analytics (BDA).
Working alongside CINI, Engineering, SAP, City University London, Lightsource, Taiger, Atos, DTA and JOT; Bird & Bird has a specialised role leveraging on its legal profile and expertise. Bird & Bird, its Brussels team taking the lead, will contribute to the general legal compliance of the project, notably through the performance of legal research and analysis of issues related to data ownership, intellectual property, privacy, security and confidentiality. Bird & Bird will also provide the necessary legal support to other working packages and to the pilots.
Bird & Bird Partner, Benoit Van Asbroeck said: "We are delighted to join this new research project. Bird & Bird has been traditionally strong in designing legal solutions for technology based businesses, and this is one of the areas in which we are confident we can make a difference. Involvement in this project will allow us to apply our extensive experience in EU research projects and to ensure legal compliance. TOREADOR is yet another project that will require finding novel means of leveraging the value of data while respecting fundamental legal principles."
The TOREADOR project has a total budget of about 6.3 million EUR.
