Bird & Bird advises Emaldo on strategic acquisition of CheckWatt, cementing Nordic leadership in renewable energy

International law firm Bird & Bird has advised Emaldo on its strategic acquisition of CheckWatt, cementing its leadership in Nordic renewable energy.

Bird & Bird has acted as legal advisor to Emaldo in its landmark acquisition of CheckWatt, which has been agreed with CheckWatt’s current owners, with closing pending regulatory approvals. This strategic transaction positions Emaldo as the Nordic region’s largest aggregator for renewable energy by combining its state-of-the-art energy management solutions with CheckWatt’s industry-leading expertise in virtual power plant operations and grid balancing.

Accelerating Europe’s energy transition and grid stability

The merger brings together complementary strengths from both companies. Emaldo’s innovative approach to energy management and CheckWatt’s pioneering aggregation and control technologies create a robust platform that will accelerate Europe’s energy transition. The combined entity is set to drive improved grid stability, broaden the integration of renewable energy sources, reduce energy costs, and unlock new revenue streams through advanced grid-balancing solutions.

The acquisition, which is currently subject to regulatory approval by the relevant Swedish authorities for foreign direct investments, is a testament to the commitment of all parties involved. During this transitional phase, Emaldo and CheckWatt will continue to operate within their established partnership framework to ensure uninterrupted service, ongoing customer support, and the seamless delivery of innovative energy solutions across Europe.

A vision for a sustainable future

Emaldo’s acquisition of CheckWatt marks a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector. By merging groundbreaking energy management technologies with advanced virtual power plant capabilities, the transaction is expected to enhance service offerings, accelerate market expansion, and play a pivotal role in enabling the large-scale adoption of renewable resources. The combined expertise and resources will empower customers and partners alike to optimize energy usage and contribute to a greener future.

The Bird & Bird team consisted of partner Martin Folke (Corporate/Stockholm) and counsel Lukas Holmberg (counsel/Stockholm).

Bird & Bird’s Martin Folke, lead partner on the transaction, commented: “Our role was to ensure that the transaction aligned with both local and international regulatory requirements while safeguarding the strategic interests of our client.”
